The Building Department is fully certified by the State of Ohio to approve and inspect all commercial and residential construction. Regulation is achieved through bonding of contractors and the issuance of permits. Permits are required for air conditioning and heating units, electrical and plumbing work, construction (add buildings and remodeling), demolition of structures, driveways, fences, yard light installation, sidewalks, swimming pools and hot tubs.
The building department is responsible for enforcing the Building Maintenance Code. This code establishes a minimum standard that structures and exterior property are to meet. Code Enforcement Officers routinely inspect the city to ensure compliance.
Community Planning is accomplished by the Building Department. The Zoning and the City Planner work closely with the Bexley Planning Commission to guide the community. Commercial development is regulated by an Environmental Review Code that requires all changes to the exterior of a commercial property to meet the guidelines reviewed by the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission also works with the Bexley Chamber of Commerce to establish appropriate guidelines for commercial development.
